1. Roof Stability: Are the trusses intact? Will the roof bow under high temperatures? Is the roof strong enough to support human weight? Ensure the underlayment is checked before accessing the roof.
2. Ladder Security and Placement: Many fatalities occur each year due to improperly placed ladders. Are the feet stable? Is the top above the roofline and securely tied? Is the ladder secure and positioned at a 4:1 angle? Always inspect your ladder and the surrounding area before use.
3. Weather Conditions: Membrane roofs, which are especially slick in wet conditions, should be avoided under such circumstances. Ice, snow, and wind pose significant hazards on roofs, particularly if the shingles or other surfaces are slippery.
4. Roof Holes: Without fall protection, an open hole on a roof can be as deadly as the roof edge. Unguarded skylights and poorly covered holes pose significant hazards. According to OSHA 1910.28, a skylight screen or railing is required on all exposed sides.
