Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Brooklyn, NY
The Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Brooklyn, NY is the largest wastewater treatment plant in New York City, serving approximately one million people. The project involved several components, including the construction of new grit, aeration, and sedimentation tanks, as well as the remodeling of existing facilities. Additionally, new control and administration buildings were constructed, along with piers to support air main and odor control piping. Carpenter & Paterson, a company responsible for pipe supports, played a crucial role in the project.

Challange
The main challenge of the project was designing supports for the 62" Odor Control piping. This piping system was located outside and presented complexities in terms of location, elevation, and roughing. A comprehensive stress analysis was required to determine the load and movement necessary to anchor, restrain, and allow for expansion and contraction due to process and environmental conditions such as wind, snow, and seismic activity. This analysis was crucial to ensure the stability and functionality of the piping system.

The Support We Provided
Carpenter & Paterson was responsible for providing engineering, materials, and fabrication for pipe supports on two contracts. Under Contract 35G with the SPMP Joint Venture, a total of 6,400 supports were furnished. Additionally, under Contract 47G with the SPII Joint Venture, a total of 5,300 supports were provided. All large diameter Type 316 Stainless Steel slide supports and guides were fabricated at Bergen Pipe Supports' manufacturing facility in Donora, PA.

VALUE DELIVERED
The support provided by Carpenter & Paterson played a crucial role in the successful completion of the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant project. The stainless steel cladding on the "egg" digesters, which process 1.8 million gallons of sludge per day, offered exceptional corrosion resistance. The designs, calculations, and fabrication of all supports and hangers were thoroughly reviewed by Carpenter & Paterson's Professional Engineer, ensuring the quality and reliability of the supports throughout the project.
