Croton Water Treatment Plant Bronx, NY

Project Description

The Croton Water Treatment and Filtration Plant, a significant facility providing drinking water for the City of New York, was successfully completed and commenced operations in 2015. It stands as a crucial milestone in enhancing water quality for the one million New Yorkers who rely on the Croton water system. This essential infrastructure project treats around 1.2 million cubic meters of water each day, satisfying approximately 10% of the city's water needs. Carpenter & Paterson and Bergen Pipe Supports played a pivotal role in the project by manufacturing over 2000 supports for these unique facilities, ensuring compliance with customer requirements, City of New York strength specifications, standards, and delivery schedules.

Challange

The Croton Water Treatment and Filtration Plant, constructed entirely underground, required deep excavation and extensive rock boring to create essential water tunnels. This four-story plant is currently operational, treating an impressive 1.2 million cubic meters of water daily. Carpenter & Paterson played a crucial role in the project by providing engineering, materials, and fabrication for the Engineered Pipe Supports. Their scope of work encompassed supplying pipe hangers and supports, variable springs, anchors, guides, and restraints for piping ranging from 12” to 66” in diameter.

The Support We Provided

The project specifications required Carpenter & Paterson to perform a complete Piping Stress Analysis. The analysis had to include all load cases, such as, deadweight, multiple thermal and pressure ranges, seismic, pressure thrust forces and water hammer. This work was accomplished using Bentley’s AutoPipe (version 9.3) pipe stress analysis software.

Specialty engineered products such as the Variable Spring hangers were fabricated, assembled, and tested at the Carpenter & Paterson facility located in Waggaman, LA. Special care was taken to ensure the supports would not interfere with the piping or structure in the tight spaces inside the plant.

VALUE DELIVERED

C&P designed, engineered, and fabricated supports such as this pipe anchor. By performing both the engineering and the fabrication, we could ensure every support would perform as intended as well as fit perfectly for an easy weld installation.
